“A Healthy lifestyle, family, friends, My Career all make me smile because I am so passionate about each.”

-Michelle

Name: Michelle

State or Country: New York

School: New York University College of Dentistry

Occupation: Dental Hygienist

What is your educational background? Degree in Applied Science

Why did you choose this career?

Ever since I was a little girl I knew this is what I wanted to do. I am grateful to my husband, family, and friends for their support through this journey.

What do you like the most about your career, and the least?

I’m so fortunate that I am in an office with a Dr that has the same vision as I do. It’s beyond rewarding to spend one on one time with my patients to help them reach their dental wellness goals.

What advice do you wish someone would have shared with you before entering your career?

It’s a long difficult road. It won’t be easy, but it will be every bit worth it.

Do you have any tips or advice for people considering this field for their profession?

You have to want it in your gut.  If you simply could not see yourself doing anything else…. Go for it, and be passionate about it every day.

How did you manage your stress and workload during school?

Again, I thank my family and friends who were a constant support.

Name one of your favorite experiences during your time studying or working?

I enjoined the outreaches that I took part in helping the underserved communities.

Any tips or advice for new students working on the clinic floor?

Stay positive, be friendly, help your fellow classmates, and offer to help out the Dental Students.

Name one of your favorite clinical rotations and why?

Pediatric rotations. I was assigned many pedo rotations; I connected with the kids and was happy to make their first dental experience a pleasant one.

What are some helpful materials/resources you used to study and prepare for your board or license exams?

Honestly, everything I had. Wilkins was the DH Bible to me; I read it cover to cover multiple times, Mosby, Jane Weiners course, and lecture notes.

Discuss one challenge you faced during your studies or work. How did you overcome it?

It was challenging for me having a family and being a full-time student. My children were still very young and needed their mother; I relied on my family for their emotional support and my husband for stepping in during that time.

What do you use for your everyday oral hygiene routine?

Toothbrush: Brio electric toothbrush

Toothpaste: Uncle Harry’s Alkalizing clay based paste

Floss: Coco floss…. My fav!

Mouth Rinse: Tooth and gum tonic

Others: Scrape your tongue – tongue scraper

What makes you SMILE and Why?

A Healthy lifestyle, family, friends, .my career all make me smile because I am so passionate about each.

Anything else you’d like to share?

I’d like to thank My Ly for asking me to participate in this interview.
