Smile 26: Pamela G.

Name: Pam G.

State or Country: New Jersey

School: NYU College of Dentistry

Why did you choose dental hygiene school?

At the time, I was a senior in high school and I was intending on planning my future in dental school and becoming a dentist. I thought hygiene school would be able to give me a very hands-on experience throughout my undergraduate years. However, plans change and I decided to just stick with dental hygiene.

What do you like most about dental hygiene school and the least?

The opportunities given to me in dental hygiene school were the best, during my senior year of hygiene school (I was in the bachelor’s program so I was in hygiene school for four years) I was chosen to go to Nicaragua for a global outreach. The least was probably the amount of studying, I felt like my brain was gonna explode.

What advice do you wish someone would have shared with you before enrolling in dental hygiene school?

Probably help out your fellow classmates especially if they’re struggling. When I was in hygiene school, I really thought people were cut throat and would purposely throw others under the bus. Like we were all going through the same thing, I think there was no room for being mean, rude, etc. Be nice and you’ll receive that back.

Any tips or advice for new students working on the clinic floor?

Manage your time wisely and if you need help ask your instructors because they are there to help.

How did you manage your stress and workload during dental hygiene school?

A planner to plan your semester at the beginning will help you. You can plan and split your time accordingly.

Name one of your favorite clinical rotations and why?

Pediatrics, I love little kids. They’re normally terrified in the chair so being able to explain and play with them during the rotation was fun.

What are some helpful materials/resources you used to study and prepare for your board & license exams?

Kaplan’s review for the NBDHE was such a big help!

Discuss one challenge you faced during your dental hygiene school and how did you overcome it?

I really found standardized testing was a challenge because I had test taking anxiety. I had to learn breathing techniques and to tell myself that everything was going to be okay while taking standardized testing.

What do you use for your everyday oral hygiene routine?

Toothbrush: Quip

Toothpaste: Crest 3D White

Floss: Oral B Glide Mouth

Rinse: Listerine Total Care

What makes you smile and why?

Everything. I smile because I have a good life. I am healthy, I have a roof under my head, I have a job, and I am surrounded by people who love me.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Always have a positive outlook at everything it’ll really help you in the long run.
