Why did you choose dental hygiene school?

I once wanted to be a dentist, but that didn’t pan out. However, I really wanted to stay in the dental field and really enjoyed the idea of being part of the prevention side.

What do you like most about dental hygiene school and the least?

I like working with patients with the supervision of experienced dental hygienists and dentists. I didn’t like the long hours.

What advice do you wish someone would have shared with you before enrolling into dental hygiene school?

I wish someone told me to not be afraid of making mistakes and to take advantage of all the school has to offer.

Any tips or advice for new students working on the clinic floor?

Don’t be afraid. Be confident in what you’ve learned and practice as much as you can. You will never get the chance to make mistakes and have someone show you how to be better than your time on the clinic floor.

How did you manage your stress and workload during dental hygiene school?

I took my stress out at the gym. Finding healthy ways to decompress made studying easier. Also, making study groups with classmates helped make sure I didn’t miss out on any materials.

Name one of your favorite clinical rotations and why?

Gouverneur hospital was my favorite rotation, because I experienced working in a hospital. Here I got to practice scaling and root planing a lot.

What are some helpful materials/resources you used to study and prepare for your board & license exams?

The dental hygiene flashcards deck, Saunders review of dental hygiene 2nd Ed, and Case Studies in dental hygiene 3rd Ed by Evelyn Thompson.

Discuss one challenge you faced during your dental hygiene school and how did you overcome it?

One challenge was trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle while getting used to commuting early mornings and late nights. I learned to meal prep to make sure I always have meals to go and studied during my commutes on the train.

What do you use for your everyday oral hygiene routine?

Toothbrush: quip electric toothbrush

Toothpaste: Crest gum detoxify, MI paste plus

Floss: cocofloss

Mouth Rinse: ACT restoring rinse
